AT&T: Outage affects 'less than 1%' of U-verse subscribers

AT&T U-verse customers across central Arkansas continued to cite service outages Wednesday.

The extent of the blackout still wasn’t clear Wednesday, though reports of problems were posted on the AT&T U-verse Facebook page from customers living across central Arkansas, plus in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee.

AT&T said Tuesday that a “limited number of AT&T customers in some markets may be experiencing issues with U-verse service,” and later cited a server problem that was causing service failures across the Southeast and Southwest United States.

“I was told by customer service it is more than 2 million people. To me, that is more than ‘some,’” wrote commenter Diane Wilson on Facebook. Other customers also cited the 2 million figure, citing conversations with customer service representatives.

AT&T wouldn’t offer precise numbers on how many customers were affected, and there was no indication when the service might be restored.

“AT&T customers in some of our markets are experiencing issues with U-verse service. This issue currently affects less than 1 percent of our U-verse subscribers, but that is too many and we are working hard to fix this," wrote AT&T spokesman Anita Smith in an e-mail message.

"We are making progress in resolving the issue which is related to a server complex, and are working to determine when service will be completely restored. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

Apparently AT&T has expanded it's customer base beyond the capabilities of its NOC. Of course the outage is only important if you are included in that "<1%".

Everyone I know with ATT has no Uverse. Guess I'm finally a part of the 1%! Where's my tax cut?

I'd say their assesment of the number of customers affected ... is about 1% accurate,
wish I'd kept my regular phone line when i got the U-verse internet. this is the very reason i didnt give Comcast my phone but AT&T's no better . Thanks Dem Gaz for finally shedding some light on the situation. AT&T has been worse than Comcast was after the snow storm, in that regard.

Just got my service back after about 38-1/2 hours down. Strangely, I learned it was back up by email from a third-party provider of 911 service for my non-AT&T VoIP gateway (the box uses Google Voice, which is free but doesn't offer 911); they had also emailed me a few minutes after it went down yesterday. (Only had email thru my smartphone, on prepaid service using AT&T's cell network but from another third party.) The biggest problem? Lack of information from AT&T.
