Senators reach agreement on immigration overhaul

By The Associated Press

This article was published January 28, 2013 at 7:53 a.m.

— A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles for a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million already in this country illegally.

The deal, to be announced at a news conference Monday, also covers border security, noncitizen or “guest” workers and employer verification of immigration status.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain — the legislation could run into trouble in the Republican-controlled House — the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation’s inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Another re-run of the 1986 Immigration Act signed by Reagan and pushed by Ted Kennedy was "supposed" to solve the problem by giving anmesty and free citizenship to illegals. Now we seed the conseuences and results. Another 'bailout' for one of these pampered group that took short-cuts and broke the law to get here.
In the meantime, the people who follow the rules are penalized by these idiots. The GOP is looking for cheap labor and the Democrats for voters, the church groups for member and Medicad for expansion and the lawyers for money.

Our president does not even respect the flag, why should he and others like him in Washington respect all the hard working people that for years has been supporting this country and all the illegals. Most politicians in Washington never had to work 9-5 in the capacty of an average Amer. citizen. They can't appreciate the hurt felt by hard working citizens when these spoon fed lazy liberals give Amer. away with no consideration for the working people here who have paid for everything they give away!! Paid with their sweat, their lives. Legal citizens of every race!! Our govt officials should be deeply ashamed of what they have allowed America to become. Most of them are just greed and power. God help us.
