Armed robber arrested after he can't open register, police say

A Little Rock man is accused of trying to hold up a gas station Tuesday night but then fleeing without taking any cash when he couldn't open the register.

Andrew Jones, 29, is facing charges of aggravated robbery and possession of a firearm by certain persons, both felonies.

Jones was armed with a handgun when he tried to rob the Mapco Express on 65th Street near Interstate 30 shortly before 8 p.m., according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

But the clerk fled and Jones was unable to open the register, so he left without getting any money, police said.

A witness followed Jones to 6900 Scott Hamilton Drive, where he was arrested.

Police say Jones admitted the robbery attempt and that the gun he brandished and a mask he wore were recovered.

Jones remained in the Pulaski County jail Wednesday morning with bail not yet set. A July 16 court date was set in Little Rock District Court.
