J.B. Hunt 2nd-quarter profit up 9%

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. on Monday announced second-quarter earnings of $87.7 million, up about 9 percent from earnings of $80.5 million in second-quarter 2012.

Earnings per share came to 73 cents in the second quarter, up from 67 cents the year before, the Lowell-based trucker said in a statement.

J.B. Hunt reported total operating revenue of $1.38 billion, up 9.5 percent from the $1.26 billion generated in the previous second quarter. The company cited load growth in its intermodal and integrated capacity solutions segments that resulted in 12 percent and 20 percent segment revenue growth, respectively, the statement said.

Intermodal refers to moving freight by more than one type of transport, such as truck, rail and ocean carriers; integrated capacity solutions involves partnerships with other carriers.

In the first quarter, the firm had posted a $73.3 million profit, or 61 cents per share, which represented a rise from first-quarter 2012 but fell short of analysts' expectations of 64 cents per share.
