Man shot in leg dies, becomes Little Rock's 21st homicide of '13

A Little Rock man who in June was shot multiple times in the leg has died, police said Wednesday.

Lawrence Thomas, 39, of 4101 Sam Peck Road, got officers' attention while in his vehicle at 12th and Woodrow streets about 4 a.m. June 30. Lawrence told authorities he had been robbed and shot.

A short time earlier, officers received a report of shots fired at 13th and Peyton streets. Thomas said he was giving someone a ride near the area, when the person pulled out a gun and demanded money. A struggle ensued and Thomas was shot three times on the outside of his right knee, according to the police report.

Thomas said the assailant left in his vehicle a hat, which was given to investigators when they arrived at the scene, according to the report.

Thomas was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center for treatment of his wounds and released.

However, Thomas returned to the hospital July 15 because of complications from his wounds and died the next day. The state medical examiner has ruled Lawrence's death a homicide.

While she could not comment on the case specifically, Associate State Medical Examiner Jennifer Forsyth said a number of complications can be connected to gunshot wounds. What makes the case a homicide, she said, is the "but for clause" — which reasons that a person would not have died from complications had it not been for their original wounds.

Forsyth said some complications that could have arisen from gunshot wounds in the knee include inflammation of the blood vessels, infections and blood clots.

Little Rock Police Department spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said no suspects have been identified at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
