Democrat-Gazette reporter wins honor

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reporter Chad Day will receive the Arkansas Press Association’s Freedom of Information Award on June 28 at the trade group’s annual Honors Banquet in Eureka Springs, according to the association’s news release.

The award recognizes a person who has defended the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act in some way, either for a single act or ongoing efforts. Day was nominated by his editors because of his knowledge and routine use of the Freedom of Information Act.

Also being honored that night will be Paul Smith, president of Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Inc. and of WEHCO Newspapers Inc., and Paul Greenberg, editorial page editor of the Democrat-Gazette.

Smith will receive the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the newspaper industry.

Greenberg, a former recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, is one four who will be recognized for working in the newspaper industry for 50 years with the Golden 50 Service Award. Jane Christenson, Charlotte Hodge and Steve Trollinger also will be honored for 50 years in the newspaper business; Dodie Evans will receive a Golden 60 Service Award.

Anita Stafford of Camden Fairview High School will receive the Journalism Educator of the Year Award.

Jeff Long, the University of Arkansas athletic director, will be honored as the Headliner of the Year, given to a person who has brought favorable headlines to the state of Arkansas.
