BOYS COACH OF THE YEAR

Ron Teat, Valley View

Ron Teat, who led Valley View to its first state soccer title in its first championship appearance this season, has been named the All-Arkansas Preps high school boys soccer coach of the year.

Teat guided the Blazers (16-6-3) through two double-overtime victories in the Class 4A state tournament and a 3-2 victory on penalty kicks over Central Arkansas Christian in the championship game.

Valley View’s state tournament run was fueled by senior defender Bradley McBride, who scored the game-winning overtime goal against Subiaco Academy in the first round, assisted the game-winning overtime goal against Green Forest in the semifinals and crossed in an assist that tied CAC 1-1 in the state final.

“It was kind of a joke with the parents before the game where they said, ‘Hey, if we’re going to win this, let’s do it before overtime,’ ” Teat said.

But with the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Teat was firing up his Blazers for another overtime.

“ ‘We’ve been here before.’ ” Teat recalled telling his exhausted players. “ ‘Look across and see how tired they are. They’ve only gone 80 minutes.’ ”

Valley View dominated overtime but didn’t clinch the championship until going to penalty kicks.

“Coaching soccer is a little different than coaching other sports because you don’t have timeouts and you can’t stop the game and make adjustments,” said Teat, who has coached the Blazers for eight seasons. “You do your coaching before the game and the kids have to make the adjustments. It’s my part to stand on the sidelines and show them, ‘I’ve got confidence in you.’ ”
