BATESVILLE - The lid was clamped on tighter than an old-fashioned fruit jar in Batesville when the City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of cigars, tobacco, cold drinks or anything except a sandwich, cup of coffee or glass of buttermilk on Sunday. Little Rock School Board President Everett Tucker Jr. indicated that use of Scripture readings would be up to individual teachers in the future, as it is now. “I certainly deplore the decision and its far-reaching implications which I am afraid will further weaken the country’s moral fiber, but I think I understand the fine line the court is attempting to draw between church and state,” Tucker said. “Insofar as its effect on our local school system,” he continued, “I think it will have none.”

Bryant joined three citizen groups Friday in two news conferences announcing opposition to the department’s action.

PINE BLUFF - Seeking relief for his overcrowded jail, the Jefferson County sheriff is asking circuit judges to oversee the early release of inmates and to cap the time a state convict can spend in county lockup. In the latest effort to protect the Jefferson County Detention Center’s budget and to carve out space for its own inmates, Sheriff Boe Fontaine requested that a statute regarding state felons in county custody essentially be amended and that the circuit judges of the 11th Judicial District-West oversee the early release of dozens of prisoners.
