Widow to serve as new Scott County sheriff

WALDRON — The widow of Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter will serve out the remainder of her husband's term in office.

Carpenter died May 31 while trying to rescue two residents trapped by rising floodwaters. On Monday, the Scott County Quorum Court appointed Amie Carpenter as the county's sheriff through the end of 2014.

The Southwest Times Record reported that Amie Carpenter will not be able to run for re-election. The newspaper reports that Amie Carpenter has no law enforcement experience, but none is required to hold the position.

Wildlife officer Joel Campora also died in the flooding, along with three women in the Y City area.
