Purple hulls: There will be peas, peas and more peas at the annual Purple hull Pea Festival in Emerson on June 29. After starting with the Senior Walk for World Peas, the festival continues with tractor exhibitions, peas and-cornbread cook-off, pea shelling competition, music, street dance and the World Championship Rotary Tiller Race. NEXT MONTH

Cardboard hulls: Creative designs of (maybe) seaworthy cardboard take to the waters of Greers Ferry Lake for the World Championship Cardboard Boat Races on July 27 in Heber Springs. The race, in which teams compete for awards like the Captain’s Award and the Titanic Award, starts at 10 a.m. Other activities include a treasure dig, watermelon-eating contest and volleyball tournament. The races end with the Demolition Derby. Spectator admission is free; race registration is $45-$50 in advance, $50-$55 on race day. Call (501) 362-2444 or visit heber-springs.com.
