Garland County deputy in prostitution case resigns

A Garland County sheriff's deputy arrested in a prostitution case has turned in his official resignation to the department.

Neil Parliment sent in the one-sentence letter Thursday to Sheriff Larry Sanders, the Garland County sheriff's office said in a statement. He was arrested by federal authorities Wednesday.

"Please accept my resignation from the Garland County Sheriff's Office, effective immediately," Parliment writes in the letter.

Parliment, 39, who served as a marine patrol officer, was arrested on charges that he hired a teenage prostitute based in Memphis to travel to Hot Springs periodically from January to June to exchange sex for money. Court documents showed the 17-year-old had run away from a Boston-area foster home.

An affidavit alleges that Parliment engaged in services with the prostitute and introduced her to others for sexual activity.

If convicted, Parliment faces up to 20 years in prison.
