Walton foundation gives $4.3 million to Teach For America

The Walton Family Foundation announced Tuesday that it'll boost Teach For America’s Mississippi Delta region with a $4.3 million grant.

The gift will allow Teach For America to raise the number of corps members placed in the two states from 550 this past school year to 582 this fall and 610 next year, the foundation said in a statement.

“Teachers are in short supply here in the Delta and without TFA, there is no way we would be fully staffed,” Superintendent Joyce Vaught of the Lakeside School District in Lake Village said in the statement.

Since 1993, the Walton Family Foundation has given $15 million to the teacher corps, which sends recent college graduates with no training in education to serve for two years as instructors in underserved, low-income schools.
