Officers arrested the Saline County sheriff on Saturday night and charged him with public intoxication and refusal to submit to arrest, the Benton Police Department said in a statement.
Benton officers arrested Bruce Pennington, 62, in the parking lot of Denton’s Trotline about 7:55 p.m. after responding to a call that a “very intoxicated” man was getting into a vehicle, Benton police said.
Pennington became belligerent with officers when they tried to convince him he ought not drive, the release states.
Because of his “unique situation,” Pennington was not detained and was instead released to a family member, Benton police said.
No further information was immediately available Sunday.
