A Garland County man was killed Saturday evening in a single-vehicle crash, according to an Arkansas State Police accident report.

Tommy Wayne Smith, 30, of Hot Springs, was driving south on Arkansas 5 in Owensville around 6:40 p.m. when his 2000 GMC Jimmy went off the road in a curve and hit a utility pole and a tree, the report states.

Police described conditions as clear and dry in the area. Smith was the 244th person to die on Arkansas roadways this year, according to preliminary reports.

There seems to be an increase in single vehicle accidents in recent months, many when weather conditions are clear and roads dry. Could the reason for this be, drivers are paying more attention to their cell telephones than their driving?
