The Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a contract for improvements to Interstate 40 in Pulaski, Lonoke, Prairie and Monroe Counties.

The commission said Monday that the contract was awarded to Nationwide Construction Group of Chesterfield, Mich., for more than $6.1 million.

The project will install 41.5 miles of cable median barrier at various spots of Interstate 40 between North Little Rock and Brinkley. It is part of a larger undertaking to install 500 miles of cable barrier by 2016.

Construction is set to begin in two to four weeks, weather permitting, and be complete next summer, the commission said.
