Four Conway officers placed on leave after Sunday shooting

Four Conway Police Department officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay following Sunday's police-involved shooting at an apartment complex.

Conway Police spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said in a news release Monday that officers Rachel Hanson, Andrew Burningham, James Burroughs and Steven Culliford were placed on leave.

Police responded Sunday afternoon to the Plaza Pointe Apartments, 2400 Market Plaza Drive, where they found John Raines IV outside the complex with a knife.

According to the release, the suspect refused to drop the knife after several commands to do so. Officers used a Taser on the suspect, but he was unaffected. The suspect then charged at Hanson with the knife, at which point he was shot.

Woodruff said three of the four officers fired their weapons more than once.

The suspect was airlifted to a Little Rock hospital. Woodruff said the suspect is still in the hospital and had no further information on his condition.

Woodruff said police received the 911 call from Raines' roommate, Nathan Dodson, who was hiding in a closet. Dodson told police that Raines attacked him and cut him with the knife, resulting in minor injuries.

Conway Police Chief AJ Gary said in a release the department is, "certain that our officers acted according to procedure in the matter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to John Raines, IV and his family as well as the officers who were involved in this incident."
