Residents in Van Buren County were evacuated Monday afternoon as a result of a nearby gas explosion.

Tommy Jackson with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said the explosion occurred at 2217 Oakland Road in Shirley, Ark., when an unknown amount of natural gas erupted a BHP compressor station.

Jackson said 25 homes and 35 to 40 people were evacuated in the area.

No injuries or waterway problems have been reported, and the evacuees have since been allowed to return home, Jackson said.
