Lake Hamilton boots boy in heels from school dance

By The Associated Press

This article was published March 5, 2013 at 7:36 a.m.

PEARCY — Lake Hamilton school officials say they were attempting to shield a boy from harassment and bullying when they refused to let him attend a junior high dance wearing a dress and high heels.

Superintendent Steve Anderson released a statement Monday saying administrators didn’t believe the boy was dressed appropriately. According to The Sentinel-Record newspaper of Hot Springs, Anderson said the district would review its policies.

He said the district did not know the boy would arrive in a dress and that administrators made a “spur of the moment” decision to block him.

An Ohio organization started an online petition asking that action be taken against two administrators who worked the dance. The petition says the boy was told he could either leave or be removed from the dance.

Flaunt your preferences somewhere else -- OR wait until you're 18. Aren't we all just sick of 'throw it in your face' behavior?

Would a girl have been kicked out if she had come dressed as a boy? As in, wearing jeans, shirt, sneakers?

Great. Now they are probably going to be sued by the ACLU. It is the job of the school to ensure that kids who are different are treated decently; not to perpetuate discrimination by treating him badly. As long as the private parts are covered, he should have been allowed to attend. Why can't people just treat people who are different nicely? The school administrators were idiots. Which brings to mind some of my favorite teacher jokes.

God made the Idiot for practice, and then He made the School Board.-- Mark Twain

Those who can't do, teach, and those who can't teach, become school administrators.

Sounds to me like the school has the kid's best interest at heart. Too little information to know the entire circumstance but this kid could have been showing disrespect to other kids at a level that would have assured an ass-whupping had he been allowed to stay. In-your-face GBLT's remind me a lot of Christians who practice their faith in public. If you have true faith there is no need for public display. If you are truly GBLT, there is no need to flaunt it to the world. Who's to say the kid was even GBLT? Vickie55 asks a very good question.

JIMBO ... at 18 the child would have rights, no matter how abusive it may be like it or not. No body will be sued over this if it was to protect the child from himself.

So if they allowed him to do this and he was assaulted as a result is the school responsible? You can bet your last dollar they would be sued in that case also. They were in a very precarious position.

Fox news had a different take on it last night and that he had a lot of student support from his classmates. i.e. no threats of ass-whupping. If there were threats, then they would carry over into school; so who's to protect him? Or will they just ban him from school because he might get jumped in the hall? What kind of 'stand your ground' do they have in school? Saw him on tv this morning and wondered if he went to classes with those ear rings. If so, then I think word was already out. I was about 8 when I tried to make a pass at a nurse.....female nurse...got her to come up to my room later...

When I was in Jr High, we had to wear our shirt tails tucked in, had to wear sock, etc. What happened to dress codes (no pun intended)? Have they gone by the wayside? Are they against some constitutional right to be able to attract attention and disrupt events ?

1) no mention of the kid's sexuality in the article. So the supposition the child is gay is erroneous.
2) gender expression is covered under the free speech clause in the first amendment. Just like guns are protected in the second.
And most importantly, there is no "protection" of this student. this is discrimination and homophobia, pure and simple. Bring on the ACLU!

Hey rainbow - If the kid's not GBLT,that's the point. What if he's straight and came dressed in such garb just to cause trouble or pick a fight or to parody another student in a bullying manner? As to gender expression if that's covered by the 1st Amendment, why aren't women allowed to go topless or men allowed to walk around with their tallies hanging about under the "gender expression" rule? I only ask the question to make a point that society allows laws that limit such expression. Thus, discrimination in the form of societal norms is not illegal. And how can homophobia be involved if the kid's straight?
