FLIPPIN — Controlled burns are to take place in the Buffalo National River area.

The first burn is scheduled for Wednesday in southern Marion County, about seven miles southeast of Flippin.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission and the National Park Service are collaborating on the project, which involves an area larger than 11,000 acres. The burn will take about 30 days to complete.

For safety reasons, the entire Lower Buffalo Wilderness area is being closed to the public during the entire burn period.

The closing will occur on the north side of the Buffalo River inside the Lower Buffalo Wilderness.

The burn is to reduce the volume of fuels that could possibly lead to catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed burns also promote the restoration of post oak savannas and cedar glades areas.
