Lake Fort Smith State Park unveils new cabins

FORT SMITH — The state Department of Parks and Tourism says 10 new cabins are now available for visitors to rent at Lake Fort Smith State Park.

The one-story cabins include both one-bedroom and two-bedroom designs with elevated covered decks facing the woods.

State Parks Director Greg Butts says the cabins were paid for by the state's one-eighth-cent conservation tax.

Lake Fort Smith State Park closed in January 2002 so Lake Fort Smith and Lake Shepherd Springs could be merged into a single reservoir. The park reopened in May 2008 on the western side of Lake Fort Smith.

Officials say the cabins are meant to be reminiscent of the park's original 1930s WPA style.

The park also includes 30 campsites, a swimming pool, marina, playground and visitor center.
