Nevada County wins 1A girls state title

The Nevada County Blue Jays claimed the 1A girls state title Saturday afternoon in a 51-31 win over the Weiner Cardinals.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter of play, and took a 26-17 lead into the half.

The Blue Jays, the No.1 seed from Region 4, worked their way to the state title game at Barton Coliseum by earning wins over Alpena, Bay and Acorn. The Cardinals, the No. 1 seed from Region 2, beat Guy-Perkins, Kingston and Wonderview, the defending state champions, to earn a spot in the title game Saturday.

Brianna Mullins was named the game's most valuable player.
