Proposed medical-marijuana ballot title rejected

By The Associated Press

This article was published March 12, 2013 at 7:08 a.m.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas attorney general’s office has rejected the proposal to ask voters to approve the medical use of marijuana in the state.

The opinion from Attorney General Dustin McDaniel’s office says the proposal contains numerous ambiguities and contains numerous grammatical errors. The opinion suggests a “lack of focus” in the preparation of the proposal.

The proposal by Robert Reed, the chairman of Arkansans for Medical Cannabis, proposes to allow the legal use of marijuana for those with terminal diseases, debilitating illnesses and those who suffer severe pain, seizures or spasms.

Reed said Monday that the language in the proposal was nearly identical to unsuccessful legislation first introduced in the Arkansas Legislature in 1999.

Makes you wonder if the proponants of this fraud were high when they typed it. Hawaii and North Carolina just rejected it too . Take your potheads somewhere else.

Please note there are actually two different groups attempting to get similar issues to vote on. This group is NOT the group that collected all the needed signatures last year. The main collective group is much more focused and precise.

The main group is "Arkansas for Compassionate Care" Look them up on FB if you'd like to learn more.

A deceased loved one's experiences w/ natural marijuana was to lessen the nausea from chemotherapy, after prescriptions for various anti nausea meds including synthetic THC didn't help. I can see it when used in some medical situations, but when you throw in nervousness, depression, fibermywhatever, and some other questionable "illnesses", I think most people catch a whiff of recreational use. Just saying....

I agree with LR 1955, the real medical marijuana proponents need to get rid of the subjective language and unhitch the recreational users, and then the bill will easily pass.

LR1955, you need to know more about fibromyalgia before you start talking. My wife has fibromyalgia, and is in constant pain. I don't like seeing her crying from aching joints and swollen connective tissue, some days almost unable to walk. If marijuana can alleviate her symptoms, then who are you to tell her she must suffer because of your ignorance?

Marijuana has been used for centuries as a mild pain reliever. Its safer than tobacco and alcohol, it can be grown at home, and the drug companies can make no money off of it. Until the government got involved, it was a safe home remedy for all kinds of ailments. If it were legal, I'd certainly ask her to try it.

Jeff, the pain reliving qualities of pot are negligible, less than an Ibuprofen. And FYI I know about fibro...., except spelling it.
And if you cared you would have helped her try it before your ignorant spout-off ! You don't even know if it will help !?!?!

The bill almost passed last time, and with very little change I predict it will pass next time around. As it should. It was pretty carefully worded to limit it to medical use.

LR1955, you think that clinical depression and anxiety disorders are not illnesses?
In your next reincarnation, perhaps you will learn a little empathy.

I never said they weren't illnesses, I said if you havent tried it how do you know it will work. Depression and anxiety disorders, I think pot will only exagerate their symptoms.
Let's get a little science in here to go with the emotions.

We don't need no stinking science. We just need the government to get out of our business.

Do you ever listen to drug ads on tv? After they say how good it is for you they spend 4 times as much time telling you how the drug will wreck your life or kill you. If doctors can prescribe that sometimes very dangerous stuff they should be allowed to prescribe something natural like marijuana or anything else they think will help their patients. The government should have no say!

NoUserName says... March 12, 2013 at 7:10 p.m.

Look, THC is legally available in pill form (Marinol, Schedule III). However, the government classifies marijuana as Schedule I which, by definition, means NO medical uses. See the contradiction? Why would one smoke it rather than take a pill, you say? Because route of administration makes a difference. Stuff should be legal.

Libertarian says... March 12, 2013 at 9:28 p.m.

LR1955, for many ailments, a doctor doesn't even know if the pills he prescribes for anyone will work. Frequently it's, "Try this for 3 months. If it doesn't work we'll try something else." And no, she's not going to try it while it's illegal. NoUserName, the pill form of THC is frequently inferior to the natural ingredients in the plant.

Mara Leveritt wrote a fantastic column on the issue for that other Arkansas paper. Look for "A mom who inhaled".

Finally, don't all good Republicans want government out of our lives? Let individuals make their own choices, and live with the consequences?

baseball6, you are mistaken about Hawaii. The legislature did kill the legalization bill, but medical marijuana in alive and well in Hawaii along with 18 other states and the District of Columbia. The maneuver used in North Carolina is by far one of the direst tricks I have ever seen in politics. There 3 patients that spoke on behave of medical marijuana, and the one member of Family council NC that spoken against. Using some obscure rule they killed the bill because of the one opposing speaker. For those of you more curious it is easy to Google.
Yes there are two groups just like last time attempting to get their version of Medical Marijuana on the ballot. Arkansans for Compassionate Care had the only ballot measure of any kind to make the ballot in 2012, We lost by less than 1%. The 2014 ballot measure has been turned in once and denied. The funny part about this is that its the same initiative as 2012 accept for the grow your own opposition has been removed. Wonder why it was good enough in 2012 but not 2014. You think they are afraid we will pass it this time? The people of Arkansas are ready for this and it will become law in 2014. It's time for the negative people to open their minds and learn what the true aspects of medical marijuana are. If you are interested in learning more about Arkansans for Compassionate Care and Arkansans for Safe Access check us out on facebook and the our website
