Reports: Iran aims to sue Hollywood over 'Argo'

By The Associated Press

This article was published March 12, 2013 at 9:03 a.m.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran is planning to sue Hollywood over the Oscar-winning Argo because of the movie's allegedly "unrealistic portrayal" of the country, Iranian media reported Tuesday.

Several news outlets, including the pro-reform Shargh daily, said that French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre is in Iran for talks with officials over how and where to file the lawsuit. She is also the lawyer for notorious Venezuelan-born terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, known as Carlos the Jackal.

After the 1979 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days, but six embassy staffers were sheltered by the Canadian ambassador. Their escape, using a fake movie as a cover story, is recounted in Argo.

After its Oscar win in February, Iranian officials dismissed Argo as pro-CIA, anti-Iran propaganda.

Though the movie is not showing in any Iranian theaters, many Iranians have seen it on bootleg DVDs and it set off a spirited debate that exposed a generational divide. Iranians who took part in the 1979 Islamic Revolution picked apart the portrayals of Tehran at the time but those too young to recall the events were eager for a different view on what had happened.

The decision on the lawsuit came after a group of Iranian cultural officials and movie critics screened the film in a closed audience in a Tehran theater late Monday.

That was humor in reference to the fighter jets to Egypt and the missiles part was added humor! Thanks for your attempt of a history lesson that I didn't need. Also are you attempting humor in your comment about my burning oil? If so you know you failed!

When the Iranians took the Americans Hostage in 1979, they did it as a measure of self defense against a repeat of 1953 when the CIA and the British covert operatives overthrew the Democratically elected Government of Iran. In 1953 the U S and the UK did it to regain control of the Iranian Oil. It has estimated that the Shah caused the deaths of over a million Iranians. Those who our government works for were happy to get the oil profits. The people oppressed by the Shah developed a deep hatred for the people who put them in shackles. Over the twenty five or so years reign of the Shah, he was best buds with our Presidents and our Government.

RBBrittain says... March 12, 2013 at 7:17 p.m.

Regardless of the film's accuracy, this lawsuit is stupid except as a publicity stunt in Iran itself (the West won't buy it even as that). Other reports say one of Iran's claims is that it omits the CIA-backed 1953 coup which removed their prime minister (a key inspiration for Khomeini and the other 1979 revolutionaries); but that coup IS mentioned in Argo's cartoonish, storyboard-like opening. (In fact, it says the 1953 PM was "democratically elected", only a slight exaggeration if any; he was indirectly elected thru parliamentary elections, much like PMs in the UK.) The film's ending is pure Hollywood (police cars chasing a plane down the runway), but it's certainly NOT grounds for legal action; a LOT more of it is true than Iran cares to admit. (And I'm not an Argo fan; I was one of the few that insisted it could NOT win Best Picture because Ben Affleck didn't even get a nomination for Best Director.)

harley: A little history....
.
"President Gerald Ford signed a directive in 1976 offering Tehran the chance to buy and operate a U.S.-built reprocessing facility for extracting plutonium from nuclear reactor fuel. The deal was for a complete 'nuclear fuel cycle'."[56] At the time, Richard Cheney was the White House Chief of Staff, and Donald Rumsfeld was the Secretary of Defense. The Ford strategy paper said the "introduction of nuclear power will both provide for the growing needs of Iran's economy and free remaining oil reserves for export or conversion to petrochemicals."

( | suggest removal )

morebeer says... March 13, 2013 at 9:15 a.m.

Since the cost of gas has come up, consider this scenario. The cost of gas is market-driven, and the more demand for gas, the higher the cost. The price went down, for example, during the recession. Now, people who drive high-mpg, efficient vehicles drive down the price because they use less gas, and people who drive SUVs, Hummers and F-250s drive up the price because they use more gasoline. So a wealthy business executive who drives a vanity F-250 to work drives up the cost of gas for his filing clerk, who drives a Corolla. Does anyone see anything unfair in this scenario, which is undoubtedly true.

Beer I can buy a little bit of that argument, but there are so many lower wage employees driving gas guzzling trucks and SUV's that it really is a bit of a fallacy. I have to agree with BillSmith about the traders driving up the oil prices.

lazybar says... March 13, 2013 at 11:42 a.m.

so what your saying is since grocery prices have almost doubled we are eating less?

( | suggest removal )

morebeer says... March 13, 2013 at 12:17 p.m.

Lazybar, I remember from economics class about inelastic demand for some products. Cigarettes are the oft-used example. Smokers don't cut back much when the price goes up. However, food does respond to price. You may eat as much, but if the price of beef doubles, you might eat more chicken, if you're on a budget. My point is that the price of gas is driven higher by people who can more easily afford gas and drive inefficient vehicles, which has a negative effect on less affluent folks. Congress recognizes this and offers tax credits for driving, say, a hybrid or electric vehicle, but the poor can't afford these vehicles. The government is also tries to improve gas performance by making manufacturers meet increasingly more efficient mpg standards.

I would like to:
Drive without a seatbelt.
Smoke in a hospital or school parking lot.
Give my kids a ride in the back of a pickup.
Pack my kids a school lunch without a serving of meat or fruit.
Buy diesel for my automobile without paying trucker taxes.
Toke a doobie.
Nibble my pop tart into the shape of a handgun.
Buy incandescent lamps.
Broadcast from my TV station without closed captioning.
There's plenty more, PLUS a bunch aimed at the conservative nazis (like post on this forum without NSA carnivores correlating my text for evil intent).

"The namby-pamby state has enshrined the principle of bureaucratic supremacy ostensibly in the interest of its citizens' welfare. On the one hand, it legislates down to the minor details of everyday life, which it punitively monitors and controls, everything from seat belts to Girl Scout cookies to recycling habits to school lunch guidelines to the shape of bananas."
~
"On the other hand, it conceives of its citizens, especially if they are not wealthy or successful, as victims of a repressive politico-economic system who need to be coddled, catered to, subsidized, and provided with every service regardless of worthiness or contribution to society, thus rendering them feckless and dependent while convincing them of their right to favored treatment."

Funny, pobucker, I don't feel particularly restrained by the state. I eat what I want, feed my kids what they want. Common sense dictates that I don't smoke and that I wear seatbelts. I've seen those bloody windshields with holes in them. I knew a kid I went to school with when I was 12 who bounced out the back of a pickup and died. We're working on the tokes, but don't blame libruls for that. Sorry about those diesel taxes. I think truckers are taxed because road engineers say virtually all traffic-related damage to highways and bridges is done by trucks. What you got against close-captioning? Got something to say you don't want deaf people to "hear?" Might you feel different if you or one of your children had hearing problems? You know, there are rich folks who feel imprisoned in mansions, and inmates who feel intellectually free in lockups. Sometimes (this sure is true of the Obama haters) tyranny it is just a state of mind.

BarichMilhusseinObamaNixonPOTUS says... March 14, 2013 at 9:25 p.m.

Beer your comments about the mansions and prisons is very interesting to me. I was at a Rush concert (for your young folks that is a 3 man group of musicians that have been together since the 70's) and they played a song called The Larger Bowl and the video morphed from a mansion into a prison while in the line "some live behind iron gates". You should youtube the song and see what you think.
