More than 120 face charges in federal drug, weapons probe

A total of 125 defendants from Arkansas and Missouri are facing charges in a major federal investigation into drug and gun trafficking.

The investigation, which was carried out in southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas, resulted in authorities seizing more than 100 guns, 3 pounds of methamphetamine, 3 pounds of cocaine and 26 pounds of marijuana, as well as other drugs, investigators said in a statement.

More than 80 of the defendants were taken into custody Wednesday on a variety of drug and weapons charges during a multi-agency sweep in the two states.

“... [O]ur commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and violent crime has never been stronger,” U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas Christopher R. Thyer said in the statement. “In order to achieve the results we see today, it takes commitment from every law enforcement agency in the region. These large-scale investigations take time and teamwork."

In Arkansas, 19 of the defendants from Blytheville will face a combined 91 federal counts including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine, aiding and abetting distribution of methamphetamine and use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug crime, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

The main Blytheville indictment, which was officially handed down March 6, charges eleven people with 53 different counts of weapon and drug crimes. Six other indictments charge the remaining eight federal defendants.

An additional 14 defendants are charged in Arkansas in the Second Judicial District, authorities said. The rest face charges in state and federal court in southeast Missouri.

The bust, a two-year investigation dubbed Operation High Intensity Trafficking Suppression, was launched "in response to firearms violence and the trafficking of narcotics" and has resulted in more than 240 undercover operations in the last two years, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Court appearances for some of the Arkansas defendants will begin Thursday morning.
