FORT SMITH — A Fort Smith park that has a Ferris wheel and carousel saw a profitable year for the first time under city control.
The Southwest Times Record reports Thursday that the Fort Smith's Park at West End ended 2012 with more than $2,700 in the black.
Since April 2010, the Fort Smith Parks and Recreation Department has operated the Ferris wheel and a carousel at the park under a lease agreement with owner Phil White for $1 a year.
City communications manager Tracy Winchell says that during the first years of operations, Fort Smith broke even with help from private donations.
On the park's busiest day under city operations, July 4, 2012, nearly 1,000 tickets were sold at $1 a ride.
