A 22-year-old London, Ark., man is accused of approaching a teenage girl and demanding she take off her clothes.
Travis Spearman was arrested shortly after the incident Wednesday afternoon in Russellville, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Russellville Police Department, officers were called about 3:45 p.m. to the 1700 block of South Erie Avenue after a witness saw a man exit a vehicle, put on a ski mask and then approach a 14-year-old girl.
Police say the man ordered the teen to remove her clothes, at which point she ran away.
Two men in the area saw what happened and chased after the man in the mask, who police say was later identified as Spearman. He was arrested in the area about an hour after the crime, police spokesman Drew Latch said.
Spearman was later booked into the Pope County jail on charges of attempted rape and filing a false police report.
Latch said the second charge was added because Spearman claimed during questioning that his car — which a witness had seen the masked man get out of — had been stolen.
Latch said police are confident the car wasn't stolen and it was actually Spearman who was seen.
"After our investigation, he was placed under arrest and was charged with filing a false report," Latch said. "We wouldn't do that unless we were sure."
A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday.
