  • John Magsam31 reactors told to upgrade vents

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has taken the first step toward ordering U.S. nuclear-power plants to improve ventilation systems at 31 reactors with designs similar to those that melted down two years ago in Japan.

The order would require U.S. operators to upgrade vents to ensure they remain operable even during severe accidents, such as the March 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after an earthquake and tsunami.

The 31 reactors are the boiling-water type. Entergy Arkansas’ two reactors at Nuclear One at Russellville are the pressurizedwater type, according to the agency.
