Arkansas sees record elk season in 2012

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says a record number of elk were harvested during the 2012 hunting seasons.

Game and Fish biologist Wes Wright says 44 elk were harvested during the hunting seasons in September and October. That includes 20 bull elk and 24 anterless elk.

The previous record was 38 elk.

The elk hunting territory is near the Buffalo River in north Arkansas.

Elk hunting began in Arkansas in 1998. Since then, 376 have been harvested during hunting seasons.

Wright says the number of elk on public and private land is increasing as well. A recent survey found at least 620 elk on public and private land, up from 453 elk in a previous survey.
