BLESS THE MIC

As-seen-on-TV personality Toure talks politics, hip-hop

Prince. Madonna. Roseanne. Cher. To be known by just one name, these people had to get out there and introduce themselves.

For controversial TV personality and former Rolling Stone writer Toure, his visit March 21 was just such an attempt.

Toure, whose last name is Neblett, addressed an appreciative crowd in the M.L. Harris Auditorium of Philander Smith College in Little Rock.

He was the final speaker in the college’s popular Bless the Mic series.

Introduced by Rodney O. Parks, director of development at Philander Smith, Toure waxed colorful on such topics as President Barack Obama’s successful campaigns, hip-hop and how it was affected by presidential politics, and current hot-button topics such as immigration and the voter-ID movement. Prior to his speech, Toure was feted at a VIP dinner in the Kendall Center.

Toure co-hosts The Cycle, which airs on MSNBC. His latest book, I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon (Atria Books, $19.99), hit bookshelves March 19.
