At the 20th Century Club’s Hope Ball on March 9, 27 high school juniors were honored for their service commitment to the club, which operates the 20th Century Club’s Lodge, a 21-room facility for cancer patients from out of town (some from out of state) who can’t otherwise afford a place to stay while receiving treatment at Little Rock hospitals. From April 2011 to now, the Lodge has provided no cost housing for more than 350 cancer patients from 16 states.
Angels’ minimum service commitment is 25 hours, but five received Service Above Self Awards, recognizing total time commitments in excess of 100 hours.
Their collective volunteerism stretched from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute’s Festival of Trees fundraiser. They volunteered at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and Baptist Health, baked Valentine’s Day cookies for Hematology Oncology Services patients and spent countless hours at the lodge organizing events and lifting residents’ spirits.
