ON CHRISTIANITY

DEAR REV. GRAHAM: I really don’t have a lot of respect for most politicians, so why should I pray for them? I’m not sure it does any good anyway to pray for a better world, because things just seem to be getting worse.

DEAR J.N.: Today people all across our nation are participating in the annual National Day of Prayer, a special day for us to pray for our nation and its leaders (as well as the leaders of all nations). And in spite of your doubts, I hope you’ll still join them in praying for our world.

Why pray for our leaders? One reason is because the Bible commands it - and it says God is pleased when we do so. No, politicians aren’t perfect (although I’ve met many who were sincerely dedicated to serving others and fulfilling their responsibilities). But doesn’t that mean they need God’s help - and also our prayers? The Bible says, “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

But another reason is because God is able to work behind the scenes to bring about good in our world. God alone is sovereign and all-powerful, and He has not abandoned this world. His ways are often hidden from us, but He still works in response to the prayers of His people. The Bible says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord” (Proverbs 21:1).

Pray for our world and its leaders - not just today, but every day. And remember: Someday Jesus Christ will return to rule the world in perfect peace and justice. He is our true hope - both now, and forever.
