CLARA WILLODEAN BENNETT, 82, of Little Rock, Arkansas,entered her heavenly home on May 4, 2013. She was born September 27, 1930, in Piggott, Arkansas, daughter of the late Earl and Eva (Brake) Payne. She was also preceded indeath by her husband of 53 years, Raymond Bennett, who died March 9, 2011. She was a member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church. She was a resident of Woodland Heights Retirement Center, where she very much enjoyed her activities and friendships.

She is survived by her sons, Craig Bennett, wife Loretta and their children, Chad and Cara, of Little Rock, Jeff Bennett, wife Sarah and their children, Catie and Kristen of Houston, Texas.

MARY SUE GENTRY, age 65, of Little Rock passed away May 5, 2013. She was born January 7, 1948 in Little Rock. Mary Sue worked for Cleveland Electric and Alltel and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse “Pete” McClain and Pansy Fox McClain.

Survivors, Son and daughterin-law, Brad and Jaimie Gentry, Bryant; Grandchildren, Jordan Gentry, Emily Gentry, Lily Carden, and Sylvia Carden, nephew, Kenneth McClain, two nieces, Janet Bredenberg, and Amy Goshien.

GABRIEL DAVID CARLSON GILBERT, of Little Rock, was bornon September 20, 1988 in Norfolk, Va. to his mother, the late Robynne Carlson-White and his father, Adron Gilbert. He departed this life May 2, 2013. Gabriel attended Gibbs MagnetInternational Studies Elementary School; Horace Mann Middle School, and graduated from North Little Rock High School in 2006. Gabriel pursued an Associate’s Degree from Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock. Gabriel had a passion for community service, he loved public work and he loved his family.

Gabriel leaves to cherish his life and memories: his parents Adron and Gwen Gilbert; his sister Morgan Gilbert; his brother Ryan Gilbert and his grandparents Ealgie Sr. and Jerome Gilbert, all of Little Rock; a host of aunts and uncles; a multitude of cousins; numerous sisters and brothers in Christ; and many friends.

PHYLLIS THORPE MILLER, 86, died Saturday, May 4, at HospiceHome Care in Little Rock.

She was born November 11, 1926 in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Phyllis and James Battle Thorpe. The family moved to Pelham Manor,New York, where she spent her childhood. Before college, she attended St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated cum laude from Sweet Briar College. She married John E. Miller, Jr. on April 30, 1949 and the couple lived in El Dorado, Arkansas, before moving to Little Rock. She was a member of the Junior League of Little Rock and First United Methodist Church, where she was an active volunteer, and later worked as a proofreader for the Arkansas House of Representatives. Kind, wise, loving and generous in so many ways, she loved her walks, gardening, needlepoint, calligraphy, her friends and family, and the many pets she rescued through the years.

Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by her three children, John E. Miller III and wife Gaea of Little Rock, Janet Ludwig and husband Don of Denver, Colorado, and Robin Foster and husband Jerry of Houston, Texas, five grandchildren, John E. Miller IV, Robin Miller, Emma, Ben and Zack Foster, two sisters, Janet Thorpe and Bettie Feather, both of Framingham, Mass., four niecesand a nephew.

After graveside services at Roselawn Memorial Park, the family will receive and welcome friends at her home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.

The Spirit and Soul of DANNY RAY PERKINS was lifted up intothe arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Sunday morning at his home on May 5, 2013, surrounded by family.

He was born June 22, 1960 in Little Rock to the late Lillie MaePerkins and Robert Brooks.

He was a loyal and dedicated member of First Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. William L. Robinson, SA Jones Drive, North Little Rock, for 31 years. Danny was a loving father and grandfather and loved giving his time to help others. Danny had strong work ethics. He began working at the early age of nine and worked continuously until the age of 50.

He worked for Keathley’s Curb Market, the Arkansas State Press and the State House Convention Center.

He is survived by his daughter, Stacy L. Perkins of North Little Rock; grandchildren, Brailon Williams and Brandon McFadden of North Little Rock; sweetheart, Bernice Perkins; five sisters, Bessie Allen and Betty Porter of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dorothy Conic, Laura Williams and Latoria Brooks of Little Rock; one brother, Jerry Brooks of North Little Rock; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Brooks and brother, Willie James Perkins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at First Baptist Church, 811 SA Jones, in North Little Rock. Interment will follow at Oakland Fraternal Cemetery in Little Rock. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. First Baptist Church.

WARREN BRENT QUALLS, 58, died May 5, 2013 at home. Hewas surrounded by loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Vivian Morley Qualls (57 years), and his two daughters, Madeline Morley Qualls (22 years) andHannah McCain Qualls (19 years). Brent’s father, Billy Henry Qualls, preceded him in death at 78 years old in 2009.

He leaves behind his mother, Maxine Reppell and her husband Charles Reppell of Mountain Home and his brother Billy Michael Qualls (61 years) and sister-inlaw Jodi Qualls, also of Mountain Home.

Brent played the bass guitar in the Praise Team band at the First United Methodist Church in Maumelle. He loved golfing, fishing, Praise Team, and being with friends and family enjoying the many blessings of God in his wonderful life.

WILSIA JEAN SCOTT, 72, of Sherwood passed away Monday,May 6, 2013 at her home with her family at her side. She was born in Heber Springs, Ark. to Woodrow Wilson Gregory and Idealia Wallace Gregory Moreland. Jean was preceded indeath by her father; her husband of 44 years, William “Scotty” Scott.

Jean was a member of Levy Baptist Church, Eastern Star and Bendemeer Grotto. She worked for Archer Drug Company prior going to work for the Arkansas Masonic Grand Lodge and retired after several years. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Jean is survived by her children, Billy Scott (Sandra) of Sherwood and Lisa Dawn Paradis (Bobby) of Mayflower; her mother, Dale Gregory Moreland of Heber Springs; grandchildren, Matt Scott (Carrie), Jessica Scott, Jonathon Paradis and Samantha Paradis; and a host of other family and friends.

ARKADELPHIA - Dr. Charles DeWitt Dunn, 67, died May 5, 2013,at his home in Arkadelphia, Ark., of complications from his battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on Dec. 2, 1945, to Charles E. and Lucille (Bailey) Dunn in Magnolia, Ark., he graduatedfrom McNeil High School in 1963, earned his BA as a first-generation college student from Southern Arkansas University in 1967, an MA from the University of North Texas in 1970, and his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1973, each in political science.

An educator for 43 years, he began and ended his career teaching political science to college students, a role he dearly loved. He began his career in 1969 at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, teaching in the political science department before moving in 1975 to the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. There, he served as a professor of political science before becoming chair of the department and being named the university’s director of governmental relations. It was this experience with the Arkansas State Legislature that sparked his interest in university administration, and in February 1986 he was named the 14th president of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark. He retired from the presidency in 2008,and with 22 years in the position, he was the longest-serving president in the university’s history.

He ended his career at Henderson as president emeritus and distinguished professor of political science, teaching courses in the American Presidency, Political Behavior, and State & Local Government. In each of his roles in higher education, he was focused on the needs of students and was particularly proud to serve the needs of students from Arkansas.

Throughout his career, heserved on numerous boards and commissions at the state, national and local levels. In 1986, he was selected by his peers to chair the Arkansas Presidents and Chancellors Association, Gov. Bill Clinton appointed him to chair the Commission on Arkansas’s Future from 1989-93, and he was a member of the Arkansas Community Foundation Board of Directors from 1996-2006, chairing the board from 2002-03. After leading Henderson into the NCAA in 1992, he served as vice president and then president of the Gulf South Conference from 1996-2000. From 2000-01, he served as president of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. He was also committed to serving his local community, and among his many service organizations were the HSU Wesley Foundation Board, the Executive Board of the United Way of Arkadelphia, and the Arkansas Methodist Children’s Home Board of Directors. He was a member of the Rotary Clubbetween 1982 and 2008, and he was selected as a Paul Harris Fellow.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Charles played an active role in the life of his family, whether traveling to Japan, organizing family trips to Orlando or simply teaching his grandchildren and daughter-inlaw to drive a four-wheeler or shoot a pistol in the Ozarks. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 47 years, Dr. Donna Jane (Parsons) Dunn of Arkadelphia; four children, Dr. Aimee M. Shouse (Robert) of Macomb, Ill., James D. Dunn (Haruno) of Kawasaki, Japan, Joseph C.Dunn (Rachel) of Little Rock, and Mary E. Dunn of Little Rock; five grandchildren, Emma Shouse, Meghan Shouse, Ethan Dunn, Isabelle Dunn and Emily Dunn; his father, Charles Edward Dunn of Arkadelphia; his brother, Michael E. Dunn (Mary) of Leesburg, Va.; his niece, Meredith Ortiz (Jose) of Silver Springs, Md.; his aunt, Dorothy Cook of Magnolia; and seven loving first cousins who live in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother.

A visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia. A memorial service celebrating Dr. Dunn’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Arkansas Hall, Henderson State University. Pallbearers include Dr. James Andrews, Mr. Bobby G. Jones, Mr. Paul Hankins, Dr.Alvin Futrell, Dr. Kenneth Taylor, Mr. Chad Fielding, Mr. Tom Gattin and Mr. Kyle Jones. BEARDEN - Katherine Jane Cooper Anthony was born in HotSprings, Ark., on Dec. 19, 1934, and died in Mercy Hospital, Hot Springs, on May 6, 2013. Many Hot Springs residents might recall Kindercoop kindergarten, operated by Katherine’smother, Eugenia, at the Coopers’ family home on Prospect Avenue.

Katherine Cooper was a member of the Hot Springs High School Class of 1952 and was active there in chorus and as a cheerleader. She graduated in 1956 from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority. She continued her education at the University of Illinois, obtaining an M.Ed. Katherine returned to Hot Springs as director of physical education at Hot Springs High School. Later she taught at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, as an assistant professor of physical education.

Katherine married Jimmy N. Anthony in 1960 and moved to Bearden, Ark., where they raised their family. She was an active member of Bearden Methodist Church. She participated in many civic affairs of South Central Arkansas, most notably as a board member of Ouachita County Hospital and in the Bearden public school system. In 2005, Katherine helped to fund the development of a new child advocacy center in Hot Springs, which she named the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center in honor of her mother and the Anthony family. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Garland County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugenia Towell and Lewis D. Cooper Jr. of Hot Springs; her husband, James N. “Jimmy” Anthony of Bearden, Ark.; her two daughters, Virginia “Ginny” Seba (1968-2003) and Andrea K. Ledbetter (1963-2008) of Bearden. She is survived by three brothers, Hiram W. Cooper (Susan) and Thomas Cooper of Hot Springs and Lewis D. Cooper of Conway, Ark. Other survivors are grandchildren Brooklyn Ledbetter Tanner and Ian James Seba and a great-granddaughter, Andrea Belle Tanner.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors of Mercy Hospital and the staff members and caregivers of West Shores senior living community. The family especially thanks Kathy Taylor, Dr. Gregory Whorton and Katherine’s many loyal and loving friends.

BENTON - Billy Frank Barlow, age 83, of Benton, passed awaySunday, May 5, 2013. He was born on April 10, 1930, in Paris, Ark. to the late Orvel and Mabel Barlow.

He is predeceased by his parents, grandson, Jesse Barlow, brotherin-law, Joe Lovell, and niece, Terry Davis Hyatt. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Buel Dean, son, Bill Barlow (Carol), grandson, Shawn Barlow, greatgranddaughter, Abby Barlow, and step-great-grandchildren, Nicki Morehead and Rodney Morehead. He is also survived by a brother, Bob Barlow. Other loving family members include sister-in-law, Karin Lovell, nieces, Sharon (Jeff) Glenn, Kelly (Kevin) Long, Alisha (John) Maddalina, nephews, Keith Lovell, Quin Barlow (Donna) and their families.

He was born and raised in Paris, Ark., after his marriage to the love of his life, Buel Dean, they moved to Little Rock where he worked for 38 years at Kraftco Building Supply and Hardware. After his retirement, they moved to Mayflower to a lakeside home to enjoy fishing. His favorite hobby was riding motorcycles, touring almost every state. He was a founding member of the Christian Motorcycle Association in Arkansas.He enjoyed spending the winter months camping in South Texas. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Benton and helping others at CJOHN. He was a 32nd Degree Mason at the Forest Park Masonic Lodge in Little Rock.

A special thanks to the Saline Memorial Hospice for their loving care and support during this difficult time.

BIGELOW - Daniel Monroe Loomis, LTC. Ret. of Bigelow, succumbed to longevity May 5, 2013, at the age of 92.

Dan was retired from the U.S. Army, having served in WWII in the European Theater. His service included the breach of the Siegfried line crossing the Rhine River. Among otherawards he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge.

HAMBURG - Mr. Lavon “Slick” Higginbotham, 88, of Hamburgdied Monday, May 6, 2013. Mr. Higginbotham was a native and lifelong resident of Hamburg and Ashley County. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World WarII, where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He worked for the United States Postal Service in Crossett and Hamburg for 25 years. He was an active and loyal member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the American Legion, a Mason and a member of the Promise Land Masonic Lodge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

MAGNOLIA - Johnnie Vahnita Delaney Wilson, 95, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at her home in Magnolia.

Vahnita was born August 3, 1917, in Pike County, Ark.; married Ralph Wilson in 1940; and they had four children. She was a homemaker and gardener, an active member of Jackson Street Church of Christ in Magnolia, Hospital Auxiliary (46 years of service), Magnolia Extension Homemakers Club, and Retired Teachers Association. She was well known for her yeast rolls and “homemade pies.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Ralph Wilson.

PINE BLUFF - George Townes “Hank” Weaver Jr., 69, of Pine Bluff,Arkansas, passed away May 4, 2013, at Trinity Village Medical Center in Pine Bluff after a courageous four year fight against cancer. He was born December 23, 1943, in Morganfield,Kentucky, a son of the late Mary Alice Hudson Weaver and George Townes Weaver.

Hank, as he was known to family and friends growing up, was raised and received his early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1962. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) from the University in 1967. He entered the U.S. Air Force, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant immediately upon graduation. While on active duty as a Procurement Officer at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, he enrolled at St. Mary’s University Graduate School of Business Administration, majoring in Financial Management, graduating with a Masters of Business Administration in 1970. He subsequently transferred toPortsmouth AFB, New Hampshire in July 1971, serving as the Base Procurement Officer until his 1972 separation from Air Force service.

George returned to Arkansas and began his civilian banking career in Little Rock at the former Commercial National Bank in 1972. He took a position in June 1973 as a Correspondent Banker with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Little Rock, covering most of Texas and New Mexico. He later assumed the position of Investment Manager to member institutions in the Ninth District of the Federal Home Loan Bank, being promoted to Assistant Treasurer of the Bank at that time. He was subsequently promoted to the position of Treasurer of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Little Rock, in that position managing an investment portfolio of over $6,000,000,000 for financial institutions over a five state area.

He moved his banking career back into the private sector in 1982 beginning with Worthen Bank & Trust Company in Little Rock (now Bank of America) as its Investment Manager. In 1987 he was elected as President and Chairman of the Board of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He later provided financial consulting service to various financial institutions in the Mid-South. In 1996 he began teaching Economics, Finance and Administration at SEARK College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the past several years he continued his education efforts in a course entitled “Education for Ministry”, offered by the University of the South.

Mr. Weaver was a former member of Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock and a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pine Bluff. He volunteered for many years in various roles at both churches, serving, among other things, as an usher and training acolytes for their roles in Episcopal liturgical service.

George’s favorite hobbies included duck hunting and fishing with his friends and fellow club members at Pecan Lake near Dewitt, Arkansas, a Southern cypress tree-filled haven for ducks during the winter and bass and crappie year round. Many wonderful mornings and evenings were spent there with his friends. Many stories and memories that will last many lifetimes were generated and relived there.

MANSFIELD, Texas - Anna M. (Ann) Berryhill was born onJuly 16, 1926 in Sparkman, Ark., and passed away on April 29, 2013 in Mansfield, Texas.

Her parents were Noah Beasley and Katherine Hopper Beasley, who preceded her indeath. Anna was also preceded in death by her sister, Noel Dean Simpson; her son, Joey Alfred Berryhill and her spouse, Carlie A. Berryhill.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Ann was a talented seamstress and an active member of the Killeen Garden Club for many years. She loved being a home maker. She was devoted to her family, church, and Country. Ann was an active Church and Community volunteer.

She started the “I Can Cope” support group through the American Cancer Society, after she had breast cancer surgery in 1978. As there were no resources in the Killeen area; she helped train volunteers to visit and assist post-surgery breast cancer patients with breast prostheses,as well as emotional support.

Ann traveled the world as a Military wife. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church from 1973 until declining health in 2010; when both Ann and Carl moved into The Meridian Assisted Living Facility inTemple, Texas. After almost 68 years of marriage, Carl passed away on March 28, 2011.

Ann has lived at Walnut Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care near her daughter and family in Mansfield, Texas since 2011.

She is survived by daughter, Carlon (Berryhill) Cloud, son-inlaw, Gerald L. (Jerry) Cloud of Mansfield, Texas. Granddaughters; Robin L. Cloud of Grand Prairie, Texas and Alison (Cloud) Palermo and spouse Kenneth G. Palermo of Houston, Texas. Great-granddaughter, Riley Cloud of Grand Prairie, Texas, great-grandson, Cason Cloud of Grand Prairie, Texas; and great-grandsons, Kyle Palermo and Kory Palermo of Houston, Texas. Sisters; Virginia Meeks, Majorie Fleming and Catherine Crawford all of Arkansas. Numerous nieces, nephews and many longtime friends survive her.
