Montana janitor charged after he accidentally shoots self in foot

MISSOULA, Mont. — A 27-year-old janitor at the University of Montana faces a misdemeanor charge after accidentally shooting himself in the foot while handling one of two guns he apparently kept in a janitorial closet.

UM campus police Capt. Ben Gladwin says Josiah Pratt was cited for disorderly conduct after the shooting Wednesday night in the Law School building.

The Missoulian reports law school officials notified students about the shooting in an email that said Pratt had a semi-automatic .45 caliber pistol and a .357 pistol in a closet.

Gladwin says the university administration will address Pratt's apparent violation of a policy that allows only law enforcement officers to carrying loaded firearms on campus.

UM spokeswoman Peggy Kuhr says Pratt was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Municipal Court records show Pratt faces a separate concealed weapons citation written by a Missoula police officer in February.
