Beebe: Shoffner needs to resign "expeditiously"

Governor says he's not surprised charged treasurer hasn't left office yet

Gov. Mike Beebe on Tuesday reiterated his call for Treasurer Martha Shoffner to resign, saying he wants her to do it "expeditiously."

Shoffner was arrested Saturday on a federal accusations she accepted thousands in cash to direct state bond business to one broker.

Beebe called for Shoffner's resignation soon after the details were released. He did so again Tuesday before speaking at an Arkansas State Police awards ceremony.

"That saves a lot of money," he said of Shoffner leaving office on her own. "You don't have to call the legislature into session or any of the other remedies that exist. Hopefully within the next short period of time, she will come to that conclusion and resign."

Beebe declined to provide a deadline for Shoffner to resign before other options were pursued to force her from office. But, he said, he wasn't surprised she hasn't done so yet, a day after appearing in court for a first hearing.

"This has happened fairly rapidly," he said. "So I expect it will take her a day or two for all of this to sink in."
