Verizon Arena shooting suspect briefly escapes

A man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and then turning the gun on himself outside Verizon Arena this week escaped from police Thursday but was quickly recaptured, documents show.

Christian Jackson, 20, is facing charges including criminal attempt to commit capital murder in the apparent murder-suicide attempt Tuesday that left him and 18-year-old Jasmine Fisher with gunshot wounds.

Fisher, a Parkview High School senior at the arena for graduation rehearsal, was shot at least once but is expected to survive.

Police say Jackson shot himself in the head after shooting Fisher. He was taken to UAMS Medical Center for treatment.

On Thursday, he was discharged from the hospital and taken to the North Little Rock police detective office for questioning about 2:20 p.m.

"When I arrived ... and opened the rear door of my vehicle to remove Jackson, he pushed past me and took off running," police wrote in the report, noting Jackson had moved his handcuffs in front of him. "Jackson ran across the parking lot, down a hill and into another parking lot before I was able to take him to the ground."

Police say a short scuffle ensued before the officer sprayed Jackson in the face with pepper spray. Several other officers then responded, and he was taken back into custody.

Jackson faces new charges of escape and resisting arrest.
