Special election needed to replace prosecutor

COLUMBUS, Miss. — A special election will be needed to replace longtime Oktibbeha County prosecutor Roy Carpenter Jr., who is retiring June 30.

Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors President Orlando Trainer tells the Commercial Dispatch that he expects a special election to be called in November. The board passed a resolution this week to alert the county election commission to the need but no date was decided.

Carpenter also served as the appointed prosecutor in the city of Starkville.

The Starkville Board of Aldermen approved advertising for the part-time position. New hires require approval by the board.

Carpenter began serving as county prosecutor in 1983 and city attorney in 1986.
