Veterans helping veterans defines Ark. food effort

FORT SMITH — A new Arkansas program started by a veterans organization specifically to feed hungry military veterans has quickly expanded its focus to simply feeding the hungry.

Ron Warnock, director of Feeding the Hungry and a veteran active with Disabled American Veterans Chapter 39 at Paris, tells the Fort Smith Times Record that the program shows veterans are not only receiving, they're giving back.

Aided by his son Billy Warnock and a host of veteran and civilian volunteers, Warnock operates Feeding the Hungry out of his family business in Paris.

In the last three weeks of October, Feeding the Hungry fed about 1,500 people. Arkansas' deer hunting rifle season opens Saturday, and program officials hope hunters donate at least 250 deer. Warnock says that would be about 10,000 pounds of meat.
