Winter weather advisory in effect for most of Arkansas

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the majority of the state, according to the National Weather Service website on Sunday.

The weather advisory — which means that areas could receive snow, sleet or freezing rain — will be in effect starting midnight Sunday through 3 p.m. Monday, the service said. A variety of wintry precipitation is expected, including snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain in parts of central and southern Arkansas.

The service said rain will start to fall as a mix of snow and sleet after midnight Sunday. Areas east of a line stretching from Arkadelphia to Newport will likely see freezing rain. Areas to the west of that line will likely receive a sleet and snow mixture.

Weather officials said ice could develop to 1/10 of an inch and that bridges may become "slick." Areas including Glenwood, Malvern and Brinkley could receive sleet and snow up to one inch.

Winter storm warnings — which are set when significant amounts of sleet and ice are expected — will be in effect from midnight Sunday to 3 p.m. Monday for Howard, Little River, Pike, Polk, Montgomery, Scott and Sevier, according to the service's website.

The service said a sleet and snow mixture of at least one to two inches is expected to occur. Wintry precipitation should begin slowing down starting late Monday afternoon.
