An argument over storing stolen items preceded a shooting in a Little Rock apartment Friday morning, according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

The shooting happened about 7:10 a.m. at an apartment at 1100 Fair Park Blvd., police said. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Wendel Giles, was hospitalized after he ran from the residence to a nearby gas station at 12th Street and Fair Park Boulevard.

According to the report, Giles — who was struck by bullets in the face, stomach and right hip — told investigators he was shot during a robbery behind an auto-parts store adjacent to the apartment complex. Police say Giles at one point stopped providing information, telling officers "to stop asking 'stupid questions,'" the report said.

He was taken to UAMS Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Giles' version of what happened was first called into question when police couldn't locate a crime scene behind the auto-parts store and again when 22-year-old Kyle Mansfield contacted police and said Giles had been shot inside his apartment at the complex.

Police responded to Park Plaza Mall, where Mansfield was working at Sbarro in the food court.

"He told officers that he was the one who had shot Mr. Giles," police wrote in the report, noting that Mansfield said Giles arrived at the apartment with stolen TVs and games and wanted to store them there. "Mr. Mansfield told him that he did not want the items there and an argument started," the police report states.

Mansfield said Giles pulled two guns on him during the argument and he took the firearm from him each time, the report said. On the second occasion, Mansfield shot Giles three times, the report said.

At least two children were reportedly in a different room when the shots were fired, but they were not injured.

Police have not made any arrests, noting that charges are "pending further investigation" including a full search of the apartment where the shooting happened.

Little Rock authorities have taken two into custody for questioning after a man was shot near 12th Street and Fair Park Boulevard early Friday morning.

Police responded about 7:15 a.m. to the Mapco Mart at 5420 W. 12th St., where employees reported that a man ran in from across the street saying he had been shot in the face and side.

The full extent of the man's injuries wasn't known, but he was conscious as he was being loaded into an ambulance just outside the gas station.

Police were searching the Fair Park Gardens apartment complex across the street, and they believe they have found an apartment where the shooting happened. Officers on the scene said they saw signs of blood inside when they ensured no one was in it and were waiting at 8:20 a.m. for a warrant before conducting a full search.

Police also said two people have been taken into custody for questioning: one located at Park Plaza Mall and another found at a nearby McDonald's restaurant.

At the mall, officers could be seen outside the food court and in the parking lot.
