A man accused of slapping his wife in a dispute over a cellphone was also charged with cruelty to animals after a search of his car trunk revealed a malnourished dog in a small cage, authorities said.
Cory A. Birts, 26, was booked into the Pulaski County jail Thursday, and he remained there Friday morning with bail not yet set.
Officers were called to Birts' home in the 5000 block of Allen Street shortly before noon to investigate a reported disturbance. Birts' wife told investigators he took her cellphone, wouldn't give it back and then slapped her across the face when she reached to take it, according to a North Little Rock Police Department report.
Birts wasn't home when police arrived, but he was stopped a short time later driving in the 3400 block of Camp Robinson Road.
He was arrested there and a search of his blue Crown Victoria then revealed a small black dog in a cage inside the trunk, the report said.
"The inside of the trunk felt upwards of 90 [degrees]," police wrote in the report, noting the outside temperature was 81. "The dog cage was filled with feces and urine. The dog was shaking and looked extremely malnourished."
The report didn't specify what happened to the dog.
A preliminary court appearance for Birts is set for Oct. 10.
