Election set for Bookout replacement

JONESBORO — Jonesboro voters are to choose a successor to state Sen. Paul Bookout, who resigned from the Legislature after an ethics panel fined and reprimanded him over his campaign spending.

Four Democrats and three Republicans are running to replace Bookout, a Democrat, in Tuesday's primary election.

Republicans seeking their party's nomination are John Cooper, Chad Niell and Dan Sullivan. Democrats in the race are Steve Rockwell, Ray Kidd, Radius Baker and Gene Roebuck.

Officials say about 1,600 ballots were cast in early voting.

If a runoff election is needed, it will be held Nov. 12. The special election for the seat will be held Jan. 14. The Legislature convenes in February for a session focused primarily on budget issues.
