HomeStyle: Let there be light, natural light!

Need some extra light in the kitchen or a walk-in closet? A skylight may be the answer.

Skylights were popular in houses built in the 1970s and 1980s, rectangular openings often placed in odd dark corners or at the apex of roofs. Often they looked out of place or simply too small for the rooms they were placed in. They were notorious for leaking conditioned air out and rain in.

Not anymore, writes Tracy M. Rogers in HomeStyle.

Modern skylights come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes, and tubular skylights can illuminate areas previously not accessible. High-end gaskets and flashings keep rain outside, where it belongs.
