A man was arrested and charged in first degree murder after he alerted authorities that he had set his girlfriend on fire, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement Saturday.
Gregory Powell, 57, notified officers about 8:58 p.m. Friday at 201 Poplar Ave. that he had set his unidentified girlfriend on fire at 3509 Coleman Ave., according to the news release. The department said officers detained Powell and called for additional officers to check the location Powell named.
Officers found an unresponsive victim who had severe burns all over her body in the residence's bathroom, the release states.
Officials said the Memphis Fire Department responded to the scene and that the woman was pronounced dead.
