COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ex-ASU player dies in car wreck

A former Arkansas State linebacker was killed in a one-car accident in Memphis early Tuesday morning, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department said.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, Torrance Suggs, a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, was driving to work just after midnight when his personal vehicle hit a large construction trailer on Tennessee 385 near Macon Road in Memphis, the release said.

The release said Suggs’ shift commander called his wife when he did not show up for his shift and they found his vehicle badly damaged near highway construction.

Suggs, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been with the sheriff’s department since 2007 and is survived by his wife and two children.

Suggs, originally from West Memphis, led ASU’s 1995 team with 84 tackles while helping lead the school to a 6-5 finish. He lettered at ASU from 1993-1996.
