State offering grants for Heritage Month

Applicants face December deadline

Organizations from across Arkansas are invited to apply for grants to help pay for projects and events that the groups plan for Heritage Month, to be observed in May, the Department of Arkansas Heritage announced.

The grants, of as much as $5,000, are available to help communities develop local events and projects for Heritage Month. The grants are designed to foster awareness and enjoyment of Arkansas’ heritage, and to assist nonprofit and community groups in planning and implementing meaningful Arkansas Heritage Month projects. In the past, Heritage Month grants have paid for festivals, exhibits, historic tours and walking tours.

Projects and events should feature Arkansas foods and food traditions, and support the month’s theme of “Come to the Table: Celebrating the Flavors of Arkansas.”

Grant applications will be accepted through Dec. 9.

“There are so many special foods and food traditions that Arkansans enjoy,” said Martha Miller, director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. “We all have special foods or meals that are important to our families or communities.

“From a simple tomato from south Arkansas to the finest cuisine featuring locally sourced foods, there are tastes that are intertwined with our memories about good meals and good times,” Miller said.

An application packet is available at arkansasheritage.com or can be obtained by mail sent to the Heritage Month Grant Coordinator, Department of Arkansas Heritage, 323 Center St., Suite 1500, Little Rock, 72201.
