Eagles outscore Miners, win by 1

Backup quarterback Cory McGonigal threw the winning two-point conversion to twin brother Chad to lift Arkansas Baptist to a 58-57 victory over the Bauxite Miners in 7-4A conference action Friday night at Eagle Field.

McGonigal threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Robert-Paul Upshaw on fourth down to pull Arkansas Baptist to 57-56 with 1:31 left in the game.

McGonigal replaced starting quarterback Riley Perkins midway through the third quarter when Perkins was taken out of the game after a stop on a running play.

“It was a heck of a game, we did well on the offense and we stopped them when we needed to stop them,” Arkansas Baptist Coach Brad Helm said.

Arkansas Baptist led 35-21 at the half and the Miners pulled to within 35-27 on the first play of the second half on a 49-yard pass from Trent Rooks to Dan Gallion with 11:50 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles responded to score on a pass from Perkins to Cory McGonigal to go ahead 42-27 with 11:42 left in the third quarter. Bauxite came back on a 9-yard run by Rooks, and after Ben Madison hit Justin Warren for the two point conversion, the Eagles led 42-35 with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

The Miners held the Eagles on downs and drove 67-yards in 11 plays capped by a 3-yard run by Madison to pull within 42-41 as the third quarter ended. Bauxite’s extra-point attempt was blocked by Ethan McCullough.

Bauxite went ahead 49-42 with 6:35 left in the game on Rooks’ 9-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point conversion run.

The Eagles drove 61 yards in just over two minutes and scored when McGonigal hit Upshaw for a 15-yard catch and run to take a 50-49 lead when Austin Sherman caught the two-point conversion pass.

After a short kickoff, the Miners scored on a 12-yard touchdown and two-point conversion by Rooks to retake the lead 57-50 with 2:59 left in the game.

The Eagles drove the last 65-yards for their last score before the McGonigal’s connected for the winning two point conversion.

Bauxite got the ball on the Eagle 49 with 1:27 left in the game, but couldn’t advance and turned the ball over on downs with 29 seconds to play.
