Hope holds off top-ranked Camden Fairview

HOPE - Hope jumped out to a 17-0 first-half lead on Camden Fairview on Friday night at Hammond Stadium, then held off the Cardinals to pull off a 17-12 upset.

Camden Fairview (7-1, 4-1 5A-South) missed two opportunities to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. After getting a first-and-goal at the Hope 5-yard line, the Cardinals came up a yard short on fourth-and-2 with 3:01 left to play.

The Cardinals forced Hope (6-2, 4-1) to punt, but turned the ball over by fumbling a hook-and-lateral play at the Bobcat 30 with only 19 seconds remaining.

The loss snapped Camden Fairview’s winning steak at 21 games and conference winning steak at 30.

The Bobcats built their first-half lead behind a 7-yard scoring pass from Nathan Stubber to Jamario Love, a 45-yard touchdown run by Love, and a 24-yard field goal by Kyler Means.

Camden Fairview, meanwhile, fumbled the ball away twice and turned the ball over on downs inside the Hope 25 twice in the first half.

The Cardinals were able to get back in the game by scoring on their first drive of the third quarter when Jayson Hamilton hauled in an 8-yard scoring pass from Matthew Ollison.

Camden Fairview also scored with 11:01 left in the fourth quarter when Ollison passed to Cornelius Pagefor a 9-yard touchdown toss, but the Cardinals were denied on both two-point conversions.

Camden Fairview finished with 409 yards of total offense to just 222 for Hope. Stubber led the Bobcats with 70 yards rushing, while completing 8 of 15 passes for 81 yards.

Ollison finished 30 of 37 passing for 249 yards, with Walker catching 14 passes for 100 yards, and Page pulling in 5 receptions for 65 yards.

HOT SPRINGS LAKESIDE 42, DE QUEEN 12

DE QUEEN - Junior utility back Clint Smedley had more than 250 all-purpose yards in Hot Springs Lakeside’s victory over De Queen.

Smedley caught 6 passes for 154 yards, rushed 8 times for 115 yards and 1 touchdown and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass.

WATSON CHAPEL 30, MAGNOLIA 0

PINE BLUFF - Senior back Devonte Battles ran for four touchdowns in Watson Chapel’s victory over Magnolia (2-6, 1-4 5A-South).

The Wildcats (4-3, 4-1) led 21-0 halftime as Battles scored on runs of 48, 11 and 23 yards. Following a safety, Battles added a 41-yard touchdown run in the second half.

WHITE HALL 48, HOT SPRINGS 35

HOT SPRINGS - Kirk Baugh accounted for 349 yards of offense and six touchdowns, leading White Hall to a 48-35 come-from-behind victory over Hot Springs at Joe Reese Memorial Stadium.

White Hall (7-1, 4-1 5A-South) reeled off the game’s final 27 points, starting with Baugh’s 57-yard touchdown pass to Kaseem Smith inside the final minute of the third quarter on the play immediately after Hot Springs (3-5, 2-3) took a 35-21 lead. Kendrick Edgerson’s 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter tied the game at 35-35, and Baugh sealed the game with touchdown runs of 51 and 50 yards on his final two carries of the game.

Baugh had 14 carries for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns, and also completed 18 of 24 passes for 271 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nine completions and all three touchdowns went to Smith, who had 202 yards.

After the game was tied 21-21 at halftime, Kenny Kelley scored on runs of 9 and 27 yards to give Hot Springs a 35-21 lead before White Hall’s rally. Kelley had 14 carries for 107 yards. Anthony Goffigan led Hot Springs with 161 yards on 22 carries and 2 touchdowns.
