Junction City shuts down Parkers Chapel

PARKERS CHAPEL - Junction City’s defense dominated Parkers Chapel on Friday night at Victor Nipper Stadium in a 49-0 victory.

Reserve quarterback Logan Harbour’s 12-yard run with 5:55 to play was the Trojans’ longest gain of the night. The first down it picked up was the first time Parkers Chapel (2-5, 2-4) moved the chains in 38 snaps. In between Harbour’s run and Ty Edwards’ 5-yard first-down carry midway through the first quarter, Parkers Chapel punted six times, turned it over three times and turned it over on downs once.

“[Assistant] coach [Brad] Smith and them worked up a pretty good plan,” said Dragons Coach David Carpenter, crediting a defensive unit that allowed 56 yards in 42 plays while holding the Trojans to one third-down conversion in 10 attempts.

Senior safety Jay Mitchell’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown on fourth and-goal from the 6 with 8:46 to play in the second quarter stopped the only momentum the Trojans could muster.

The Dragons (8-0, 6-0) welcomed back junior running back JaQwis Dancy, who returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a Week 5 ankle injury at Hampton and rushed for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 carries. Dancy left the game after a 22-yard gain at the 7:13 mark of the second quarter.

“He’s been nursing that sprained ankle and got over on the sideline and got a little stiff,” Carpenter said. “We didn’t want him to get back out there, so we left him out to keep letting it get healed up.”

NO. 2 CARLISLE 2, MARVELL 0

CARLISLE - Marvell forfeited its 6-2A game against Carlisle late Friday afternoon because it had only eight players, Mustangs Coach Jessie McGruder said.

McGruder said Marvell (0-8, 0-5) began the season with 16 players and doesn’t plan to play its final two scheduled games this season against Clarendon and Palestine-Wheatley.

Carlisle (8-0, 5-0 6-2A) received the maximum 13 points under the Arkansas Activities Association playoff tiebreaker system with the forfeit.

NO. 3 BEARDEN 28, RISON 20

RISON - Jamond Young’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Wilson in the fourth quarter lifted Bearden to a 28-20 victory over Rison in a battle between teams near the top of the 8-4A conference.

Young, the Bears’ junior quarterback, threw a second touchdown pass to Wilson and scored on a 54-yard run to lead Bearden (6-1, 5-1).

Rison (5-3, 3-2) got to within a point in the fourth quarter when running back JoKenzie Broughton scored on a 1-yard run to make it a 14-13 game in the Bears’ favor.

After Young responded with his long touchdown run, Wildcat senior quarterback Nathan Wilson rushed for his second 1-yard touchdown run of the night and passed for the ensuing two-point conversion.

But Young’s second touchdown pass to Wilson secured the Bearden victory.
