Legislators set up vets-home panel

The Arkansas Legislative Council on Friday approved the creation of a subcommittee to monitor the state Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to find a site and an appropriate design for the new veterans home.

Sen. Jane English, R-North Little Rock, told members that the Arkansas Veterans Home Task Force expires at the end of the month and that the new subcommittee would allow the Legislature to continue to receive updates from the department. The state must submit an application for the new site by December, she said.

The task force recommended that the Veterans Home Subcommittee be comprised of five representatives and five senators, but its membership had not been appointed Friday. The subcommittee would expire at the end of January 2015.

The task force reviewed applications for proposed sites throughout the state and then toured a handful of locations.

The department extended the deadline for cities to submit more information about proposed sites to Nov. 22. The selection process is led by the department director, Cissy Rucker.

The subcommittee was approved without opposition.
