Inmate goes into cardiac arrest, dies

NEWPORT - An inmate at the Jackson County jail in Newport died Sunday evening, Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas said.

Anthony Maurice Reeves, 37, of Jonesboro was extradited from the Craighead County jail to the Jackson County jail Sunday morning on an outstanding warrant involving failing to comply with a court order, the sheriff said. At 7:16 p.m., a jailer found Reeves in cardiac arrest in a cell.

Personnel began CPR, and an ambulance transported Reeves to the Harris Hospital in Newport, where he died at 7:53 p.m., Lucas said.

Authorities will send Reeves’ body to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy. Officials are investigating the death, Lucas said.
